Lingual orthodontics: Past and future
|
 |
|
Orthodontics, like all sciences, has evolved and advanced thanks to the tireless work of researchers around the world. This is how, 20 years ago, a totally invisible system was born: Lingual Orthodontics, a technique which consists in placing all the brackets or braces on the inner side of the teeth, leaving the visible surfaces free of accessories.
This is a treatment modality that is currently revolutionising the dentistry world and which is being used more everyday. The end result is the same as that achieved through conventional orthodontics, but with certain additional benefits.
After several years, many cases have been treated and successfully resolved despite the resistance to innovative change incurred by the advanced technology.
Lastly, it is important to note that the cosmetic advantage makes it an ideal option for adults who refuse to use visible braces and also for all those who, for one reason or another, don’t want to sacrifice their appearance.

Advantages of the Lingual Technique over the Vestibular Technique

Some of the advantages of lingual brackets are:
- Reduction in the number of injuries relating to the practice of sports.
- Lingual brackets permit a better and more comfortable use of certain wind instruments (flute, clarinet...), and also reduce the trauma and interference with the lips.
- They act as protection for the tongue during the retraction of the anterior teeth.
- It is, indisputably, the best cosmetic option for fixed (invisible) orthodontic therapy.
